This article will share important news from the Secretary of Homeland Security regarding the extension and redesignation of Yemen for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Here’s what you need to know:

What is TPS?

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) provides protection from removal from the United States and allows TPS holders to:

  • Apply for employment authorization in the US.
  • Apply for travel documents (advanced parole) to travel outside and return to the US.

Extension and Redesignation Details

The extension and redesignation of TPS for Yemen will be valid for 18 months, starting on September 4th, 2024, and ending on March 3rd, 2026. Here’s what you need to know if you currently have TPS or if you’re looking to apply:

For Current TPS Holders:

  • You can apply for an extension of your TPS status.
  • The re-registration period runs from July 10th, 2024, to September 9th, 2024.
  • Your employment authorization document (EAD) will be automatically extended until September 3rd, 2025. Note that this extension applies only to the employment authorization, not the TPS status itself.

For New Applicants:

  • If you do not currently have TPS and wish to apply, the initial application period runs from July 10th, 2024, until the end of the TPS program on March 3rd, 2026.

Requirements for TPS Application

There are specific requirements for continuous residence and physical presence that must be met:

  • Continuous Residence: You must have been continuously residing in the US since July 2nd, 2024.
  • Continuous Physical Presence: You must have been continuously physically present in the US since September 4th, 2024.

 How to Apply

To apply for TPS, employment authorization, or travel documents, you need to submit the following forms to USCIS:

  • Form I-821: Application for Temporary Protected Status.
  • Form I-765: Application for Employment Authorization.
  • Form I-131: Application for Travel Document.

Important Considerations

  • Filing fees apply for TPS, employment authorization, and travel document applications. Some extensions of TPS may be free of charge, so it’s crucial to check the USCIS website for the latest information and fee requirements.
  • Ensure you are familiar with the specific requirements for TPS for Yemen and double-check them to comply with all regulations at the time of filing.
